The collection was started in 1978. In 1988 it was supplemented with live elks and roe-deers kept outside.

Due to a demandful  project of dolphinarium construction the Museum and lack of resources to maintain a proper care of the collection, 6945 exhibits were temporary deposited  to the Museum of the National Park of the Curonian Spit.

Since 2012, majority of the exhibits have been moved to the Natural Museum of Klaipeda University.
